BASIC INITIAL CARE OF TORTOISES

kangaroo line

1. Check the shell for damage or infection. If the shell is soft it can indicate a lack of calcium.

2. Tortoises will only eat under water. They can be fed on turtle pellets, blackworms, freeze dried white shrimp, turtle dinner, chopped up heart, beef or liver. Most of these foods can been bought from reptile shops.

3. Make sure they can get out of the water if they want by providing a rock or something they can climb on to.

4. Keep the (unchlorinated) water clean at all times. A calcium block should be supplied.

5. During the warmer weather the young tortoise will need two meals a day, decreasing to one meal when the weather gets colder, adult tortoises will only feed twice a week. If the tortoise is outside it will go into hibernation during the winter.

6. If you have no facilities when the turtle first arrives, it can be put in the bath with just enough water to cover it. Put a rock or large stone in the bath for it to get out of the water if it wants. Put a towel under the rock so it doesn’t scratch the surface of the bath.

These are only very basic instructions, please consult an experienced reptile carer for more detailed information.
