Fauna Rescue of S.A. Inc currently has a membership of over 500 members. Around one third of these are active wildlife carers. The other two thirds are non active members (Friends of Fauna Rescue) who are vital to the organisation as their yearly membership fee helps cover the cost of running the organisation.
Our organisation is always on the lookout for new carers as the demand for wildlife coming in needing care is very high especially during spring and summer.
We have all native species coming in for care: Pelicans, Birds of Prey, Magpies, Parrots, Ducklings & nectar feeding birds like Honeyeaters, Wattlebirds & Lorikeets. Also the more unusual like Possums, Kangaroos, Echidnas, Bats, Reptiles & Tortoises.
Only members with specialised training will receive snake calls.
Fauna Rescue receives approximately 7,000 calls a year, some of which are general enquiries or advice but resulting in 3,000 animals, birds or reptiles coming in to the organisation for care each year.
If you have ever thought about becoming a wildlife carer we would love to hear from you. There is wildlife out there that needs "your" help.
We hold monthly training Workshops on different topics (refer to meetings for further information). Our meetings are open to both members and the public. Feel free to come along before you join to meet us and find out more about Fauna Rescue of South Australia.
We have coordinators for each species of wildlife ( kangaroo coordinator, bat coordinator, magpie coordinator, reptile coordinator etc.) who are there to give you advice and guide you through the care of the species you are looking after.
Animals will not be referred to new members until they have attended a Workshop. However if you are unable to attend the Workshop we can buddy you up with your closest experienced member or coordinator.
There are free training notes available for members.
It is up to you what species you care for and how many. Some members specialise in one or two species and others care for all species. Some people work during the day so can't take care of babies but still look after the older injured animals/birds that only need one or two feeds a day.
Whatever your lifestyle there is many different areas you can help out in. Some of these being talks, displays & fundraising.
If you wish to be a non active carer you will receive our newsletter which comes out every 2 months. You can still attend our training meetings. Your yearly membership fee is vital to maintaining the care we can give to wildlife in need.
If you wish to apply to become a Fauna Rescue member you will need to print off a Membership Form and forward to Fauna Rescue with your membership fee using cheque or money order (please do not send cash). Alternatively you can forward your filled out application form to Fauna Rescue of S.A. Inc, P.O. Box 241, Modbury North, S.A., 5092 or you can pay by credit card using PAYMATE.
